Denizens of the invisible empire

Spider Hair
Spider Hair

This is part of the exoskeleton of a spider. The cuticle is very textured, and tiny hairs, or setae, stick out from it. Insect setae are often sensory; some are sensitive to vibration (like hearing), some to chemicals (like smelling), and others to things like temperature, gravity, and humidity. I do research on sensory setae on copepods.

This whole picture is about 40 micrometers across.
