Bacterium
Bacterium

Most bacteria have a rigid but porous cell wall that protects them from their environment and gives different types their characteristic shapes. This one is a rod-shaped bacillus.

Bacteria can thrive in all kinds of environments, some of them really extreme. For example, live bacteria have been found in polar ice and in the almost boiling hot springs in Yellowstone National Park. In recent years bacteria have been found in deep ocean vents where the temperature might be as high as 110 degrees Centigrade (230 degrees Fahrenheit). There are bacteria in the salty Dead Sea and in hot underground oil deposits. And, of course, there are bacteria in you and on you!
