More insects we rarely see - and (perhaps) wish we never do.

Bee Stinger Honey bees generally only sting to protect their hives. The bees that are capable of stinging are the female worker bees. Bee stingers are barbed and, after being thrust into the skin, are left in the skin but are pulled out of the abdomen of the bee. Poison sacs are attacked to the stinger and pump poison into the wound. Some people are very allergic to the poison and must be taken to the hospital. Others can get by with applying ice packs, calamine lotion, or taking antihistimines. The bee dies after losing its stinger, but you probably won't! The widest part of this stinger is about 40 micrometers.
