Edit My Personal Information
When you click this link, you will see the same material that is displayed on your information page, but arranged into editable text boxes. The different information categories are labeled to the left of the boxes.
- Edit the text as you would with a plain text editor. If you know HTML, you may include HTML tags in your text to control formatting, links, etc., but this is not necessary for your basic information (a list of useful tags is given below).
- Any fields that you do not want to have appear on your Faculty Information Page, leave blank (or clear if they have text in them already).
- At present, there is no direct user control over pictures. You may insert a picture in your text by using the HTML IMG link (see below) provided it already resides somewhere on the Web. If you want a picture of yourself (or anything else that you wish) in the upper left corner of your PBRC page, you should create it in Photoshop, sizing it 200 pixels wide (about 300 high) and save it as a .jpg format file. Email this file to Brad with a request to include it on your page.
- To have your email as a linked item, just type your normal email address in the Email box
- Alternate web page box: To have a personal web page linked, type "lab" in this field, and a title you want to appear on the PBRC page as a link (e.g. "Jane Doe Lab Page". This assumes that your pages are located at the URL: "http://www.pbrc.hawaii.edu/[program code]/[PBRC user name]/lab"
- Research Abstract (30 word limit): What you type here appears as an identifier after your name on your unit's web page (not on your PBRC Personal Information page).
- Research Description and Selected Publications may be anything you choose to place here. It can include images and links to other web sites, or PDFs of your publications (check copyright restrictions).
- To upload your changes, click the "Update page" button at the top or bottom of the edit page. A preview of the revised material will show. Use the "Back" button if you wish to keep making changes.
- Click "Publish to web" button to finalize the page. If all has gone well, you will go to a "Web publishing" page with the message "New information successfully published" posted.
- From here, you can go:
- Home - takes you back to initial page (where you should log out)
- View Web Page - brings up new window,
- Edit {your ID} Page" - to reedit your page again.

Useful HTML codes for your Information Page
If you wish to make your PBRC posting a little more than plain text, you can use basic HTML codes to indicate special conditions for different pieces of text. Most HTML codes are enclosed in angle brackets and must be used in pairs. The first code of the pair starts the special condition, and the second, which is the start code preceded by a "/", ends it. Be sure to end your conditions, or your entire text following will be subject to that condition! For example to italicize and bold a journal reference in your publications list, you might write "<I>J. exp. Biol. </I><B> 204: </B> 533-544," which will show on your page as "J. exp. Biol. 204: 533-544." Useful codes:
- <B> </B> - bold
- <I> </I> - italics
- <H1> </H1> - largest section heading
- <H2> </H2> - second largest section heading
- <H3> </H3> - second largest section heading
- <HR> - "horizontal rule: draws a line across the page. No end-condition
- <P> - start new line. No end-condition
- <A HREF="{URL}">{link words} </A>- a link to another web page may be formed by placing the URL for the page in the space between quotes indicated by "{URL}" and placing appropriate link text in the space indicated by "{link words}."
- <IMG SRC="{URL}"> </A>- an image on the Web may be linked using this structure by placing its URL in the space between quotes indicated by "{URL}"; vertical alignment may be specified by preceding the terminal angle bracket with an ALIGN=[location] tag where [location] = MIDDLE or TOP or BOTTOM. Example: the image at "http://www.pbrc.hawaii.edu/~danh/gifs/hartline_icon.gif" can be included (centered in a line of text if you want) using the string:
<P> <IMG SRC="http://www.pbrc.hawaii.edu/~danh/gifs/hartline_icon.gif" ALIGN=MIDDLE>:

Getting Started Using the Editing Tool
- Ascertain that you have a Personal Information page on the official PBRC web site (even though blank). It should be accessible via the link with your name on the PBRC home page in the box labeled "PBRC Faculty". It will have a URL of the form "http://www.pbrc.hawaii.edu/[program-code]/[your-PBRC-user-name]/". If your name does not appear as a linkable entry there (blue), please fill in an account request form for a PBRC Affiliate on the New Account Page. (Program codes are adm = Administration; affiliates = Affiliates; bln = Bekesy Laboratory of Neurobiology; ccrt = CCRT; cnsf = Computer Network Support Facility; kml = Kewalo Marine Laboratory; me = Molecular Endocrinology; nhhr = Native Hawaiian Health Research; rtp= Research and Training Program [?])
- Login at the URL: http://www.pbrc.hawaii.edu/faculty/login/
- Use the temporary password "XXXX"
- This will bring up a 4-entry menu. Select "Change password" and follow directions to select a new password. Do not use your PBRC password: this page is not as secure as the standard account.
- Select "Edit my personal information" to start entering that information. See the Help text for "Edit My Personal Information" for assistance
