As a Minority Biomedical Research Support (MBRS) and Minority Access to Research (MARC) Fellow, I am working in the Retrovirology Research Laboratory of the Pacific Biomedical Research Center under the direction of Dr. Richard Yanigahara and Dr. Vivek Nerurkar. Currently, I am studying the polyomavirus, JCV, as a migration marker for the peopling of the pacific and the pathology of JCV in the brain deteriorating disease, progresive multi-focal luekoencephalopathy. Responsibilities include: DNA extractions from urine, polymerase chain reactions (PCR), gel electorphoresis, DNA cloning, sequencing and analysis, oral and poster presentations.

Summer 2000 Biomedical Science Training Enrichment Program (BioSTEP), Yale University
Under the direction of Dr. Heino Velazquez, I successfully cloned a DNA sequence encoding a novel potassium chloride cotransporter protein. Responsibilites included: DNA extraction from tissue, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), gel electropherisis, DNA cloning w/ TA cloning kit, primer selection and an oral presentation of my research.

Summer 1998 Biomedical Engineering Summer Research Program, Vanderbilt University
Under the direction of Dr. Robert J. Rosselli, I tested a novel method of detecting pulmonary edema, fluid leakage into the lungs, using dextrans, colored sugars. Responsibilites included: measuring lung membrane permeability with dextrans on animal models, data analysist and computer database input, and oral presentation of my research.

1997-1999 Horticultural Assistant and Supervisor, Aiea, Hawaii
Employed by horticulturist, Robert Chisari, I hired, trained, and supervised six employees in the removal, transplanting, planting and caretaking of rare and exotic tropical plants.

1995-1998 Audio Visual Assistant, Iolani School, Honolulu, Hawaii
Starting as a student helper in the Audio Visual Department during my freshmen year of high school, I was hired as a full-time Audio Visual Assistant in the summer sessions of high school. As an Audio Visual Assistant, I performed clerical work, maintained and operated projectors, cameras, televisions, videocassette recorders, lighting and sound systems, edited audio and videotapes, designed and created signs.

1995-1998 Audio Visual Assistant, University of Southern California
With experience as a Audio Visual Assistant at Iolani School, I was referred by my employers, Cyrus Won and Daniel Feldhaus to Dr. Micheal Jackson and the Admissions Department of the University of Southern California to operate audio and visual equipment, lighting and sound systems for their conferences held in Hawaii.
