Hawaii HIV Vaccine Clinical Trials Unit.  Dr. Jerome Kim, a board certified infectious disease specialist with experience in HIV-1 preventive vaccine research for the military, who is currently under recruitment as a co-investigator with the Hawaii ACTU, has submitted a proposal, in response to an NIH RFA, to create a Hawaii HIV Vaccine Clinical Trials Unit in Hawaii, with a subsite in Vietnam.  He is currently the Director of Virology for the Henry M. Jackson Foundation in Rockville, Maryland, and he is scheduled to arrive in spring/summer of 2000.  His vaccine expertise, our clinical research infrastructure and RRLās long-term collaborative relationship with the Ministry of Health in Vietnam will hopefully result in funding of this grant.  His addition to the program here should substantially enhance our capabilities in conducting basic research on the immunologic aspects of HIV-1 infection.
