HARC 004 - Acupuncture Treatment for HIV-Related Distal Symmetric
Polyneuropathy. This
study, initiated by Dr. Amy Kindrick and funded by the Clinical Research Center,
is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to investigate the
impact of acupuncture treatment on distal symmetric polyneuropathy in
HIV-1-infected individuals. The
treatment group will receive a three-week course of active acupuncture and the
control group will receive a similar regimen using sham-acupuncture points.
Health-related quality of life, nerve conduction amplitudes, and clinical
neuropathy disease status are being assessed at baseline and at the completion
of treatment. Of the 30 patients
targeted for enrollment, 12 have been recruited.
The study will be continued over the next year.
