HARC 002 - Characterization of the Wasting Process in HIV-1 Disease. Major findings of this study, which was funded through the RCMI-supported Clinical Research Center (CRC), were insulin resistance and increased waist to hip ratios suggestive of visceral adiposity in normal weight individuals with AIDS independent of protease inhibitor use. A manuscript, entitled ãFasting hyperinsulinemia and increased waist-to-hip ratios in non-wasting individuals with AIDSä, has been published in AIDS (1999;13:1359-1365). Two additional manuscripts, one dealing with leptin and other hormone levels and the other with heat-shock proteins in HIV-1-associated wasting, are being prepared for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
