Kewalo Marine Lab Researcher Helps Author Declaration to Protect Great Barrier Reef

Dr. Bob Richmond, Kewalo Marine Lab Professor and President of the International Society for Reef Studies, was one of ten leading coral reef researchers to co-author a declaration calling for the Australian government to restrict port developments along coastal regions bordering the Great Barrier Reef.  Plans to develop new shipping ports to meet the demands of the booming coal mining industry in the country pose significant environmental threats to the already declining health of the reef.

The declaration, signed by many prominent coral reef researchers and endorsed by several coral reef societies, calls for a restriction in port developments, and seeks to provide guidance to the government in creating and implementing sustainable development policies.
