PBRC Faculty are extensively involved in formal academic instruction at the University, teaching courses, presenting guest lectures associated with their specific expertise, assisting with administration of graduate and undergraduate programs, and serving as graduate faculty in a diversity of academic departments.

PBRC faculty teach courses, seminars, and topics courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, often revolving around the individual faculty member’s research focus. PBRC faculty also give frequent lectures in their areas of expertise in a diverse array of courses at most levels, though primarily at the upper undergraduate and graduate levels, in collaboration with faculty from numerous colleges and schools across the UH Mānoa campus. In addition to formal class instruction, all PBRC faculty who advise undergraduate and graduate students offer 399 (Directed Study), 499 (Directed Reading or Research), 699 (Directed Research) and 800 (Dissertation Research) training on an ongoing basis. Many also offer HON 496 (Honors Thesis Research).

PBRC faculty are also involved in a range of administrative activities associated with various academic programs, including the Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology (EECB) Graduate Specialization Program and the NSF IGERT Program in Ecology, Conservation and Pathogen Biology.
