International Year of the Reef

Robert Richmond's efforts to understand and protect the world's fragile coral reefs were featured in the May 1 issue of the Kaleo. Richmond is on the faculty of PBRC's Kewalo Marine Laboratory.

Annual Conference

The Hawaii Conservation Alliance will hold it's 16th Annual Conference at the Hawaii Convention Center July 29-31, 2008. The theme of the conference will be Island Ecosystems: The Year of the Reef. Dr. Sylvia Earle will be deliver the keynote address. Early bird registration is available until May 23. For more information, visit the Conference website.

The Hawaii Conservation Alliance is a cooperative partnership of 16 government, education and non-profit organizations, including PBRC's Center for Conservation Research and Education (CCRT). CCRT director Ken Kaneshiro is the 2008 Executive Chair of the Alliance.

Research News

The work of PBRC researchers has been featured on the cover of the April 10 edition of the journal Nature. The accompanying scientific paper is the result of a four-year study of the evolutionary relationships among a large group of marine invertebrates. Investigators from PBRC's Kewalo Marine Laboratory were Casey W. Dunn, Andreas Hejnol, David Q. Matus, Kevin Pang, William E. Brown, Elaine Seaver, and Mark Q. Martindale.

Martindale is the Director of the Kewalo Marine Laboratory.
