Program Director: F. Healani K. Chang, DrPH This Program provides rigorous training for ten honors caliber undergraduate students in their Junior Year who wish to prepare for graduate studies leading to the doctorate degree (Ph.D.) and careers in biomedical research and training. Hawaiians, part-Hawaiians, Filipinos and other Pacific Islanders are strongly urged to apply. Student participants are engaged in an intensive two-year research experience under the guidance of well qualified faculty members in such areas as Biochemistry, Molecular biology, Reproductive biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Oncology. Students spend their first summer and academic year in a laboratory within the University of Hawai‘i system. The second summer is spent in a lab on the U.S. mainland in the same area of research. The student returns to Hawai‘i at the end of the summer to complete the academic year. Each MARC U*STAR student receives a yearly stipend of $10,956. Partial Hawai‘i resident tuition and fees are paid for while the scholar is in the program. A trip to a mainland scientific meeting is also offered to the participants to present their research results. If selected for the MARC U*STAR Programs, UHM will waive the requirement to be registered in summer session since you are expected to conduct a research project full-time from June through August. Please notify us if you have any question(s).
