Haumana Undergraduate Program:

This program provides a two-year research experience for undergraduate students who are considering pursuing a doctorate degree in the field of Biosciences. Hawaiians, part-Hawaiians, Filipinos and other Pacific Islanders are strongly urged to apply. Each year 12 students will conduct research with experienced and qualified faculty in areas such as Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Psychology, Reproductive biology, and Zoology.

Other program activities are scheduled during the summer and academic year and includes student orientation, student meetings and seminars, a project proposal presentation, and a final research report presented by each student. The program allows students to earn up to $8,400 for their participation which begins in the summer on a full-time basis, and continues through the academic year on a part-time arrangement. Funds are also provided for supply expenses and for the student to present their research findings at a scientific meeting on the Mainland.

If selected for Haumana Programs, UHM will waive the requirement to be registered in summer session since you are expected to conduct a research project full-time from June through August.  Please notify us if you have any question(s).

Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizen
  • Full-time Classified Student at UHM
  • A Strong Interest in Attending Graduate School in the fields of Biosciences.
  • 3.00 or higher GPA

Haumana Graduate Assistant Program:

This program provides a two-year research experience for classified graduate students who are majoring in the fields of Biosciences. The graduate assistant will be matched with a participating Haumana program graduate faculty mentor in his/her interest: Cellular and Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, Microbiology, Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering, Psychology, or Zoology.
