Malia Rivera MARC U*STAR Programs participant, 1993-1995 Haumana Graduate Assistant, 1998-1999 Degree: B.A. Zoology (UHM), M.S. Zoology (UHM) and PhD Environmental Science, Policy and Management (UC-Berkeley) PI: Dr. Gillspie And Dr. Palumbi
After completion of her B.A. and M.S. degrees in Zoology at the UHM, she continued on to receive her PhD from the University of California at Berkeley. In 2002, Malia was awarded the prestigious Knauss Fellowship, which provides unique educational experiences to students who have an interest in ocean, coastal and Great Lakes resources, and in the national policy decisions affecting those resources. Presently, Malia is a Outreach and Education Coordinator for the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Research Program at the Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology.

Recipient of 4 research fellowships, Dr. Hanakahi obtained her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Yale University in 1996. A returning invited speaker to the University of Hawaii's MARC U*STAR program, Dr. Hanakahi provided inspiration and motivation to MARC scholars during Spring semester 2001, and will return again in the coming year to meet with present MARC scholars to share academic and professional experiences and assist scholars in their preparation for graduate programs and careers. Dr. Hanakahi is presently a post-doctoral fellow at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund-Clare Hall Laboratories in South Mimms, England.

Ligaya Stice-Beredino MARC Program participant, 1987 - 1989 Degree: B.S. Chemistry
From 1991 - 2000, Dr. Stice attended the Boston University School of Medicine where she obtained a M.D.-Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry. At present she is a resident in Anesthesiology at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Stice received the Sydney Cooperband Cancer Research Award in 2000.

Mabel P. Duyao MARC Program participant, 1980 - 1982 Degree: B.A. Biology
After completion of her Bachelor's degree in 1982, Dr. Duyao attend Boston University School of Medicine where she obtained a Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1992. Presently the group leader of Research and Development for the Ardais Corporation in Arlington, MA, her project is Implementation and Optimization of existing or new technologies for the generation of tissue derivative products. Credited with more than 30 publications, Dr. Duyao's distinguished achievement includes a patent for a novel transporter protein gene from the Huntington's disease region.

David A. Ornelles MARC Program participant, 1980 Degree: B.S. Electrical Engineer
Dr. Ornelles received a Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1987 from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a member of the American Association for Advancement of Science, American Society for Cell Biology and American Society for Microbiology.
Finding most rewarding his role as a faculty mentor at Wake Forest University's Department of Microbiology and Immunology in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Dr. Ornelles say he strives "to establish an environment that promotes the development of students to the maximal extent limited only by their talents and desires." A major focus of his research concerns the transport of mature mRNA from the nucleus to the cytoplasm.

Kevin Pang MARC Program participant, 1979 - 1980 Degree: B.S. Chemistry
Dr. Pang, Associate Professor at Bowling Green State University's Department of Psychology, received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology in 1986 from the University of Colorado Medical Center. His education and experience includes a NIH post-doc research fellowship at John Hopkins University 1988 - 1990. Dr. Pang has more than 30 publications to his credit and has presented at more than 40 conferences.
