Always a part of you

Most living things are made up of one or more cells. These are more cells from our bodies and from plants.

The nerve cells in your body communicate with each other by transmitting either electrical or chemicals signals to each other at specialized sites called synapses. In this picture, the presynaptic cell is on the right, and it contains small vesicles of a chemical neurotransmitter (yellow). When it gets a signal, The membrane of the snaptic vesicles will fuse with the presynaptic cell membrane, the cehmical will travel across the tiny gap between the two cells, and then the chemical will bind with special sites on the postsynaptic membrane where the black and red line is. This is how the second cell gets the message.
